The song "Clean" by Ryan Adams compares the process of getting over a failed relationship to the process of becoming clean of a physical addiction. The speaker of the song is attempting to get over a failed relationship with the audience. This is apparent in the lines, "The drought was the very worst / When the flowers we'd grown together died of thirst," where "the drought" refers to the difficult times of their relationship, which is symbolized by the dying flowers.
